Dive into the poignant world of «Journey Untold,» an audiovisual webcomic that encapsulates the compelling journey of a young Afghan family amidst the rise of the Taliban.
The website intricately weaves their narrative, guiding readers through their courageous escape from Afghanistan to Switzerland. As a part of this creative endeavor, my role encompassed conducting interviews, crafting storyboards, and designing captivating illustrations.
goals
Our mission for this project was to reshape the narrative around migration and refugees, using a distinctive fusion of storytelling, animation, and audio. Our vision was to transform the act of reading into a fully immersive experience, akin to the sensation of opening a comic book. The project not only aimed to resonate with audiences across devices but also to create an authentic, engaging, and unobtrusive atmosphere that beckoned readers to lose themselves in the story.
challenges
Navigating this project presented its share of challenges. Sensitivity was paramount, as we approached the lady who shared her deeply personal story. Our goal was to amplify the story’s accessibility, prompting us to optimize the website for various devices. Additionally, we grappled with the balance of adopting a comic book format for a story that addressed a serious topic, striving to uphold the integrity and authenticity of the content.
process
The journey unfolded by transforming the interview into a meticulous storyboard. Rotoscoping each image, animating them into videos, and overlaying an audio narrative became integral to our process. Simultaneously, the coding process for the website commenced, emulating the aesthetic of a traditional comic book. While our roles were defined, we collaborated seamlessly across various aspects of the project.
styleguide
The visual language we crafted in the styleguide emerged as a guiding force. Striking a harmonious chord between the illustrations and the content, our design leveraged a monochromatic palette infused with subtle touches of red to maintain reader focus on the story.
